In early 2023, Colin Wiel and August Rosedale began working together on a project to create a system of AI agents that could act as a software developer. August already had a successful AI startup under his belt, and Colin had been using AI since the ‘90s and had launched several successful companies. In May of that year, we incorporated Qurrent to tackle that problem.  

 

After five months, the system was successful at complex tasks such as adding features to large existing codebases and building applications completely from scratch. To achieve those things, the system had to digest and understand codebases, run terminal commands, edit files, run code, and debug its own mistakes.  

 

At that time, we had the realization that if agents could perform software development, they could handle most other cognitive tasks, and as a result, they were going to transform every role in every industry. The big opportunity for us would be to focus on our framework itself, and move beyond just software development to facilitate the creation of agent systems of all types. So, that’s what we did.
